Big box stores might own Black Friday and on-line retailers might hold claim to Cyber Monday, but the Saturday after Thanksgiving is all about those shops that live and thrive on main streets far and wide. This year, Small Business Saturday is set for November 30, 2013. Let's give our local businesses a little attention on this day! While this special event was started in 2010 by credit card giant American Express, the day has taken on a life of its own. The day has helped put small business in the spotlight with its motto, "It's the day we all shop small." In 2011, the U.S. Senate officially recognized Small Business Saturday. Thanks to aggressive media campaigns, last year more than $5.5 billion was spent to support local retailers on this day.
