Master the Art of Layering
Your go-to guide for functional fall fashion
As the crisp fall air rolls in and the leaves start painting the world in shades of gold and crimson, it’s time to embrace one of the most versatile and fun aspects of autumn fashion: layering. Layering isn’t just about staying warm, it’s about expressing your personal style and creating outfits that are as functional as they are fashionable.
"Layering isn't just for outdoor enthusiasts. When you live where we do, you have to be prepared for the weather to do just about anything, and layering is the best way to do that,” says Sherry Bruner, sales associate with The Base Cap. “It really sets you to be comfortable no matter what the day brings."
Start with the Basics: The Base Layer
The foundation of any layered look starts with the base layer. The key here is to choose something comfortable and breathable. This could be a simple long-sleeve tee, a fitted thermal shirt, or a lightweight sweater. Opt for neutral colors or classic patterns, as these will be easier to mix and match with other pieces.
When it comes to choosing fabrics, wool or polyester are best for both moisture wicking and temperature regulation.
For those early fall days when the weather is still a bit warm, you might want to go with a short-sleeve tee or a tank top. As temperatures drop, you can easily switch to a thicker base layer to add warmth.
Add a Middle Layer for Versatility
The middle layer is where things get interesting. This layer is meant to provide insulation and add some style flair. Think cardigans, flannel shirts, or lightweight sweaters. The beauty of the middle layer is that it’s versatile—you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion.
A flannel shirt, for instance, can be worn open over your base layer for a relaxed, casual vibe or buttoned up for a more put-together look. A cozy cardigan can be draped over a tee for a casual outing or layered under a jacket for extra warmth on those chillier days.
When choosing your middle layer, consider the weight and texture. Wool and cashmere offer extra warmth and sophistication, while cotton blends provide a more casual and breathable option. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures and patterns to add some visual interest to your outfit.
Get Technical with Your Layers
If you love a little outdoor adventure, technical layers in fall apparel are a game-changer. Moisture-wicking fabrics are a must because they pull sweat away from your skin, so you stay dry and warm instead of getting chilled. Insulated vests help here as well. “They provide warmth where you need it,” Sherry says. “When you keep your torso warm, that’s where the heart is and everything flows from there, helping to keep the rest of your body warm.”
When you search for these technical fabrics, wool is always a good choice. Not only is wool moisture wicking, Sherry says, “It’s anti-microbial, so you have a natural odor protection.”
Rain and wind breakers are key for keeping out the elements while still letting your body breathe, so you don’t overheat.
“A staff favorite around here is the Rab Kinetic rain jacket. I like to say it's a 2 for 1 jacket,” Sherry says. “Being 100% waterproof, you get the protection of a rain jacket, but with the functionality of a lightweight softshell.”
By layering these smart fabrics, you’re ready for anything autumn throws your way, whether it’s a sudden downpour or a gusty wind.
Top It Off: The Outer Layer
The outer layer is your final touch and often the most visible part of your outfit. This layer is all about protection from the elements, so choose something that suits both your style and the weather. Classic options include denim jackets, peacoats, and puffer vests.
“Vests are my favorite layering item for fall in Montana where weather can change on a dime,” Sherry says.
A well-fitting denim jacket is also a fall staple that works with nearly everything. It’s perfect for those milder days when a heavy coat isn’t necessary. On the other hand, a peacoat is a versatile piece that looks great with jeans or dressed up for work or a date night out.
Play with Proportions and Colors
Layering is also a great opportunity to play with proportions. Don’t be afraid to mix and match lengths and silhouettes. A long cardigan over a shorter top can create a visually interesting look, while a cropped jacket over a longer shirt can add a modern touch.
When it comes to color, it’s time to embrace the hues of the season.
"I love the warm, earthy tones, like deep golden yellows, forest greens and warm browns, and even the deep purples,” Sherry says. “I love to start my day off with a warm drink and the brisk morning air and by afternoon I am enjoying the last of what summer has to offer."
While using these hues, you can do it with accessories. A bold scarf or vibrant hat can make a statement and bring your whole outfit together.
Layer with Confidence
Ultimately, the key to successful layering is confidence. Don’t be afraid to mix different textures, patterns, and colors. Play around with your wardrobe and see what combinations you love. Remember, layering isn’t just about keeping warm, it’s about showcasing your personal style.
So as fall settles in, take advantage of this season’s fashion possibilities. Embrace layering as your personal style playground and enjoy crafting outfits that keep you cozy and chic all season long.
