Beat The HEAT
A Summer Survival Guide for Outdoor Enthusiasts in Billings
By Sherry Bruner, The Base Camp
Summer is in full swing, bringing 15 hours of daylight and endless opportunities to explore. By mid-July, Billings sees average highs around 90°F, according to the National Weather Service. Whether you're paddling the Yellowstone, hiking the Rimrocks, or camping in the Beartooths, staying cool takes planning, smart gear, and local know-how. Here’s how to thrive—not wilt—in the summer sun.

Timing Is Everything
The sun’s intensity peaks between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV exposure and dehydration risk are highest. Plan around it:
- Morning: Hit the trails or launch your paddleboard early, when the air is crisp.
- Afternoon & Evening: Paddle or swim when the sun starts to dip and water temps are more refreshing.
- Midday: Take shade breaks or head to indoor spots, museums, or splash pads to cool off.

Cool Gear for Hot Weather
The right gear can make all the difference. Here’s what to bring:
- Breathable clothing: Light, loose, light-colored options from brands like Freefly or Patagonia help reflect heat and allow airflow.
- Sun protection: Wide-brimmed hats, polarized sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours).
- Hydration systems: CamelBak, Osprey, or Platypus packs—aim for 2+ liters per person, plus electrolytes like Nuun or Liquid I.V.
- Adventure extras: Nomadix Towels and ROVR Coolers keep you dry and your drinks cold.
- Water-worthy sandals: Bedrock Sandals are a staff favorite, with Chaco as another great pick for river and trail comfort.

Cool-Off Spots in Billings & Beyond
Splash Pads & Pools
- Rose Park Pool and Oasis Water Park feature slides, shade, and family-friendly swim zones.
- Free splash pads at South Park, Highland Park, Terry Park, and others operate daily.
Lakes & Rivers
- Lake Elmo State Park: Ideal for beginner paddlers and swimmers, with shady picnic spots and a fenced dog park.
- Yellowstone, Bighorn & Stillwater Rivers: Great for rafting and kayaking—but fast, cold, and potentially hazardous. Life jackets are strongly recommended and often required depending on your craft.
Rentals & Guided Adventures
- The Base Camp offers kayak and SUP rentals for calm water exploration.
- For whitewater adventure, check out Absaroka River Adventures or Adventure Whitewater for guided trips on the Stillwater or Yellowstone Rivers.

Beyond Billings
- Beartooth Highway: Temps can be 20°F cooler at the top—perfect for scenic escapes.
- Red Lodge: About 10°F cooler than Billings, with trails, lakes, and mountain breezes.
- Bighorn Canyon: Not always cooler, but loaded with boating and swimming opportunities.

Master Water Safety
Montana’s waterways are refreshing—but demand caution. Stay safe with these tips:
- Swim smart: Stick to designated swim areas. If no lifeguard is present, know your limits.
- Never go alone: Use the buddy system.
- Life jackets: Required on all watercraft (kayaks, SUPs, boats). Must be Coast Guard-approved.
- Supervise kids closely: Every second counts.
- Bring safety gear: A throw rope, buoy, phone, and first-aid kit—and know how to use them.
- Know the water: Check currents and water levels, temps, hazards, and entry/exit points.
- Watch the weather: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks warns of sudden storms and wind gusts—especially dangerous on the water.
Stay Heat-Safe & Informed
Before you head out
- Check the weather and river levels. Conditions change fast.
- Know the signs: Heat exhaustion can bring dizziness, nausea and a rapid pulse. Heat Stroke can bring confusion, fainting and rapid pulse. If you have these symptoms—call 911 immediately.
- Cool-down tips: Use wet towels on your neck, take shade breaks, and hydrate before you’re thirsty. Electrolyte drinks help too.
Montana summers are wild, warm, and meant to be enjoyed. With a little preparation and local insight, you can chase adventure without overheating.
See you out there!
