It's Socktober!

finding the right sock for any ocassion

The Base Camp

As the weather begins to shift from sandal season and we get to dust off those shoes and boots, we’re reminded that socks are an integral part of dressing for the weather. They aren’t just another accessory, they provide protection, moisture control, temperature regulation and last, but not least, comfort. They add a layer between the shoe and your foot, easing friction and preventing blisters.

How Do You Choose?

In the world of socks today we have many different options to pick from. Just ask the Base Camp’s shoe department manager Reagan Moorehead. “We offer customers high quality long lasting socks with superior performance. The majority of our socks are geared around specific outdoor activities, but many people are also buying our socks for everyday wear because of their comfort and durability.”

Walk into any store selling shoes or clothing and you’ll find a broad array of sock options.

“At the Base Camp, the majority of our socks fit into the tech category. Think socks geared towards hiking, skiing, running, and mountain biking,” says Reagan. These socks are usually made with merino wool or a wool and synthetic blend offered in both ankle and boot cuts. You’ll also find sport, compression and everyday socks.

The Materials Matter

With the many different categories of socks, you’ll also find just as many options for what they are made of. Most common materials used are cotton, wool and polyester or synthetic fibers. Less common are bamboo, hemp or silk.

SILK

Before the advent of wool blend socks, avid outdoor enthusiasts used silk sock liners under thicker scratchy full wool socks. This natural insulator wicks moisture and offers a smooth texture against the skin. It's lightweight and comfortable but less durable than other materials.

COTTON

Cotton socks are making a comeback these days. Maybe you’ve seen youth in tall white Nike socks with Crocs or Birkenstocks? In the outdoor world, cotton is not recommended for active uses. The problem with 100% cotton socks is that they absorb sweat, saturate quickly and dry slowly, which is a perfect recipe for blisters. However, they are inexpensive and if you buy organic cotton socks, they are non-toxic and microplastic free.

WOOL

A staff favorite at the Base Camp is the brand, Darn Tough Socks. Reagan shares, “Their socks are made in Vermont, with fibers sourced from the US and around the world. They have a lifetime warranty and are super durable which is one of the reasons why we love them!” Grab a pack off the shelves and you’ll see that they are usually a blend of soft Merino Wool and a combination of synthetic materials.

Wool has a long history of being one of the most versatile natural fibers. The biggest advantage is that it’s thermostatic (temperature-regulating), so you stay comfortable in a wide range of temperatures. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water, which helps feet remain dry in most conditions. By itself, it can be more expensive and take longer to dry. Which is why you see most tech socks being blended with synthetic fiber.

SYNTHETIC FIBERS

In the world of synthetic fibers, you’ll see many different names. Names such as Polyester, Spandex, Nylon, and Lycra. Several materials are often combined or used for greater comfort and fit. Nylon and Lycra® spandex help socks retain their shape, create a snug fit and, in some sock styles, provide arch support. CoolMax® polyester, Wickspun™ acrylic and Isolfil® polypropylene are commonly used fibers that wick away moisture to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters. A performance sock brand that is made of purely synthetic materials, a blend of Polyester, Nylon and Spandex, is Feetures. They’re known for their arch support band, extra cushion at high impact areas, iWick fibers and top of the foot ventilation. Synthetic materials are often more durable, fast drying, and moisture wicking, but can be less comfortable in hot, humid conditions and have reduced warmth when wet. Pair Merino Wool with these synthetic fibers and now you have a dream team pairing.

Fun fact, feet are covered with about 250,000 eccrine sweat glands, making feet one of the sweatiest places on your body. Performance fabrics help absorb and disperse all that moisture. What that means for you, is less chance of blisters or discomfort being active and doing what you love!

It's Socktober!

During the month of October, you can drop by the Base Camp and take part in their Socktober event. When you buy two pairs of socks, you will receive the 3rd for free. It’s a great time to stock up on your favorite socks or try a new brand! Brands like Farm to Feet, Smartwool, Sockwell, and Feetures. You might recognize Farm to Feet from their annual Holiday special that brings folks in for socks and Black Diamond gloves. Farm to Feet is also 100% made in the US. Their slogan: “Committed to creating the world’s best performance socks…while being 100% made in the US: US materials, US Manufacturing, US workers.”

Regardless of your adventure, choosing the right sock can mean the difference between a successful trip or one of blisters and frustration. The knowledgeable staff at the Base Camp, like Reagan, can not only help you find the right pair of shoes, but also help you pick the right socks for your next adventure. Reagan says, “Whatever it may be, we have the right socks for you!”
