Embracing Winter in Montana

There's a World of Winter Adventures waiting

The Base Camp

When most people think of winter in Montana, their minds quickly drift to the thrilling slopes of downhill skiing and snowboarding. After all, the state is home to some of the best winter sports destinations in the U.S. But for many of us here at The Base Camp, the Montana winter landscape offers so much more than just downhill action. From quiet trails to scenic hot springs, there’s an entire world of winter adventures waiting to be explored, and we’re here to share some of our favorites.

The Importance of Finding Winter Activities You Love

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking winter is just about enduring the cold and snow. But in reality, the season can be a time to thrive — especially when you embrace the right activities and gear. Winter can be a time of joy and mental well-being if you approach it with the right mindset. In fact, research by Kari Leibowitz, a PhD candidate in psychology at Stanford University, found that communities in northern Norway, where the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon for months, still maintain surprisingly low rates of seasonal depression. The secret? A cultural attitude of celebration rather than endurance when it comes to winter. Embracing the season through outdoor activities, cozying up, being in nature, and simply enjoying the moment has a profound impact on well-being. Here in Montana, that approach can make all the difference.

Our Favorite Outdoor Activities for Winter in Montana

1. Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is one of the most peaceful and beautiful ways to enjoy Montana’s winter landscape. It’s a perfect way to explore the vast, snow-covered wilderness at your own pace. Whether you’re gliding through dense forests or taking in breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, cross-country skiing offers something for everyone. Some of our top recommendations for cross-country skiing destinations include:

  • Red Lodge: This charming town offers a variety of trails, with options for both beginner and advanced cross-country skiers. Silver Run Trail loop and the West Fork road being popular spots, just make sure to check conditions before going. Of course there is also the popular Red Lodge Nordic Center.
  • Homestake Lodge: A beautiful and serene area, great for those seeking solitude and tranquility. They offer lodging and trails for all skill levels.
  • Silver Crest Winter Recreation Area: Known for its scenic views and well-maintained trails, perfect for both beginners and experienced skiers, as well as snowshoers. Just down the road from Showdown Montana, Montana’s oldest downhill ski area.

2. Snowshoeing

If you prefer something a little more accessible, snowshoeing is another fantastic way to enjoy Montana’s winter wonders. Snowshoeing requires little more than sturdy footwear and snowshoes and a sense of adventure, making it perfect for exploring remote areas. The act of snowshoeing itself is great exercise, and it allows you to explore areas where skis might not reach.

3. Hot Springs

After a long day out in the cold, there’s nothing quite like warming up in one of Montana’s many natural hot springs. Whether you’re soaking under the stars or inside a cozy bathhouse, these springs are the perfect antidote to winter’s chill. Some local favorites include:

  • Chico Hot Springs: A relaxing and picturesque destination located in Paradise Valley. Probably the first and most iconic hot spring on our side of the state. With lodging, dining and other activities on site you certainly won’t be bored.
  • Yellowstone Hot Springs: Located near Gardiner and down the road from Chico, this is a great spot to relax after a day of winter exploring and wildlife viewing.
  • Bozeman Hot Springs: Close to Bozeman, this spot offers a variety of pools to soak in, twelve to be exact, including both indoor and outdoor pools. Situated close to Bozeman, Big Sky, and Yellowstone which makes it a great stop over to relax and is excellent for large groups.
  • White Sulphur Springs: Nestled in the foothills between the Castles and the Belt Mountains and just thirty minutes from Showdown and Silver Crest, It offers a mix of outdoor recreation and historic small town charm, so you are sure to find something for everyone. .

4. Yellowstone National Park

Winter in Yellowstone National Park is a must-see. With the crowds of summer gone, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, offering incredible opportunities for wildlife watching, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The sight of bison and elk in the snow, steam rising from geothermal features, and the crisp winter air make Yellowstone one of the most spectacular places to visit in Montana during the colder months.

5. Wildlife Watching

Montana’s winter landscape is not just about the snow—it’s also about the wildlife. Winter is one of the best times to see animals in their natural habitats, especially in places like Yellowstone, where wildlife remains active even in the coldest months. Bison, elk, wolves, and eagles are just some of the species that thrive in winter. The quiet, stillness of a snowy Montana day makes wildlife watching even more magical.

Purchase a guide book from a local shop like the Base Camp and definitely make sure to pack binoculars for an up-close look.

The Right Gear for Montana Winter Adventures

As the saying goes at The Base Camp: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong gear.” The key to enjoying Montana’s winter is not just to dress warmly but to be properly equipped for the unique challenges the season brings. Here’s a rundown of some essential gear to make your winter adventures more enjoyable:

  • Shoes/boots with ice traction: Montana’s winter can be icy, so having a sturdy pair of boots with good traction is essential. Look for boots designed for cold, snowy conditions with insulated linings to keep your feet warm.
  • Cross-country skis and snowshoes: Whether you’re hitting the trails or exploring the backcountry, quality gear makes all the difference. Did you know The Base Camp offers snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals? Come talk to the experts and we can get you outfitted.
  • Nomadix quick-dry towels: If you plan to take a dip in the hot springs, a lightweight, quick-drying towel is a must-have. Packs up small and easy, absorbs amazingly well, and doesn’t hold on to sand or debris like other towels.
  • Binoculars: A great pair of binoculars is essential for wildlife watching, particularly in places like Yellowstone. You never know when you might spot a majestic bald eagle or a pack of wolves.

Embrace Winter with the Right Mindset

Winter in Montana can be cold, but it’s also incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and filled with opportunities for outdoor adventure. By finding the right activities and the right gear, you can embrace the season with joy instead of just enduring it. Whether you’re cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, soaking in hot springs, or watching wildlife, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the magic of Montana winter.

As the research from Kari Leibowitz shows, the secret to enjoying winter lies in your mindset: Instead of dreading the dark, embrace it. Revel in the beauty of the snowy world around you, and discover how much joy winter in Montana can bring. At Base Camp, we believe that with the right gear and a positive attitude, winter is something to celebrate, not something to endure. So, bundle up, head outside, and make the most of the season. You might just find that winter is your favorite time of year.
