Layer Up!

What to wear for the cold season in Billings

The Base Camp

Up until recently, Billings residents have enjoyed a mild start to winter, without the snow or bitter cold. But in the past month, winter has arrived with a vengeance, sending many of us rushing to dig out our winter gear. Since we will likely have a few more months of cold and snowy weather, The Basecamp wanted to share a few tips on how to layer properly to stay comfortable and warm.

The Basics of Layering

While dressing for winter might seem a bit different from the milder fall or spring temperatures, the layering principle remains the same. The key to staying warm isn’t just about piling on heavy clothes; it's about creating a balance of warmth, moisture control, and breathability.

THE BASE LAYER

The first layer is all about moisture management. Choose a lightweight, moisture-wicking material like merino wool or synthetic fabrics (like polyester or nylon) for your base layer. This will keep sweat off your skin, helping you stay dry and warm. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture, which can make you feel cold when temperatures drop.

THE Mid Layer

The mid-layer is where the insulation happens. Depending on the level of cold, this can be a fleece jacket, a wool sweater, or even a puffer coat or vest. This layer traps heat close to your body, providing warmth. Remember that you can always add or remove mid-layers based on the weather and your activity level.

the outer layer

The outer layer is your main defense against the elements—wind, snow, and rain. Opt for a weatherproof jacket or coat, ideally one that’s insulated for extra warmth. Materials like Gore-Tex or other waterproof, breathable fabrics are excellent choices. This layer should be designed to shield you from the harsh elements while allowing moisture from sweat to escape.

LET'S TALK BOTTOMS

While most of the layering we do is primarily for our torso, you can’t forget your bottom half. A baselayer and a weatherproof pant is usually all you need to stay warm. But the combinations are endless depending on your activity. For example, after a day of skiing, you can take off the more technical pant for a comfy, cute and warm skirt to slip on over your base layers. Pair this with a vest or sweater and now you're ready for some trail to town fun.

Keep Warm in Winter

Accessories Matter

In Billings, it’s not just about the jacket. Hats, scarves, gloves, and boots are essential for keeping extremities warm. A thermal hat, windproof scarf, and insulated gloves can make a huge difference when temperatures dip. Consider boots with ice traction to help you stay upright on those icy sidewalks, or microspikes for more aggressive ice and snow traction on the trail.

Don’t Overdo It

While layering is important, it’s also about comfort and flexibility. Over-layering can lead to sweating, which can quickly lead to chills once you head indoors. Always dress in layers you can easily adjust or remove as needed.

PRO TIP: If you plan to go x-country skiing, snowshoeing or even just take a hike, layering becomes even more important as your body tends to warm up as you move your body. Try to start off with one layer less than you think you need to be warm just getting out of the car. That way you don’t sweat as much, which will keep you warmer in the long run. If you like to start off warm, just make sure once you start to warm up, remove a layer to keep from sweating too much.

Check the Forecast

Montana weather can shift dramatically, so stay aware of changing conditions. If a snowstorm is expected, be sure your outer layers are extra sturdy and waterproof. On milder days, you can get away with lighter options.

Layering up for winter is more than just throwing on your winter coat and heading out the door. By dressing with moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers and protective outer layers, you'll stay comfortable, no matter what the thermometer reads. Throw on a few accessories and your head, hands and feet will be toasty as well. You'll be ready for whatever winter throws at you.
