Hot Color, Cool Home

bold blooms & plants can transform your space this summer

There is something almost rebellious about bringing hot, saturated color indoors when the world outside is baking. While the rest of the neighborhood wilts in triple-digit heat, your home can feel like a lush, vibrant retreat, full of life, color, and the kind of energy that makes you actually glad to be inside.

Summer is the season of bold color, and this year more than most, we are leaning into it. Think sizzling oranges, electric pinks, lime greens so bright they almost hum. These are not shy, retiring colors. They are colors that wake up a room and make you feel something the moment you walk in.

Start With a Statement Plant

If you want to transform a space, start with one plant that means business. Bromeliads are simply spectacular. Their bold, architectural spikes come in fiery reds, vivid oranges, and pinks that look almost artificial in their intensity. Grouped together on a table or windowsill, a collection of bromeliads creates a display that feels deliberately designed rather than casually assembled. They are also remarkably tolerant of indoor conditions, which makes them as practical as they are beautiful.

Anthurium is a showstopper that earns its keep in ways a purely foliage plant cannot. Their glossy, waxy blooms in deep red, coral, hot pink, or white last for weeks, sometimes months, making anthurium one of the longest-performing flowering indoor plants. It thrives in bright indirect light and asks for very little in return for a very long season of color.

A phalaenopsis orchid brings something altogether different to the mix. Where anthurium and bromeliads are bold and immediate, an orchid is graceful and considered, with long arching stems and delicate blooms that add a layer of refinement to any room.

Bring in the Cut Flowers

Houseplants set the stage, but cut flowers bring the drama. The most exciting stems available are the ones that lean fully into summer's boldest palette.

Asiatic lilies in bold orange are as cheerful and confident as summer gets. Arrange them with carnations in hot pink and lime green poms (we call them kermits) for a fresh pop and you have a design that feels alive and energetic.

For something more dramatic, tropical stems like birds of paradise, heliconia, oncidium orchids and ginger are genuinely spectacular bringing a taste of the exotic into a room. These are stems that command attention and make even a simple glass vase look like a deliberate design choice.

How to Style It All Together

The secret to making bold color work indoors is commitment. One bold design or plant in an otherwise neutral room looks accidental. A thoughtfully grouped collection of colors, heights and textures looks like a decision. Do not be timid. Group things together, vary the heights, mix textures and let the colors speak to each other.

Keep your vessels simple. Bold flowers and tropical plants do not need elaborate containers competing for attention. A clean white ceramic pot, a simple glass vase, or a woven basket let the plants and flowers be the stars they are meant to be.

Think about placement, too. A statement plant in a previously vacant corner transforms it into a destination. A bold arrangement on a kitchen island or a dining table sets a mood for the entire room. Even a single striking stem in a bud vase, intentionally placed on a bathroom counter, makes the whole space feel more alive.

Let Summer Come Inside

The heat outside does not have to mean a long, colorless stretch of staying indoors. With the right plants and the right flowers, your home can feel like the most vibrant, welcoming place to be. Sometimes the season's most beautiful moments happen not in the garden, but in a cool, colorful room where the light falls just right across a bold arrangement and an anthurium reaches toward the window.

That is a summer worth savoring.
